A CLIMATE CHANGE TEST

This test is a combination of selected questions from various sources. Good luck. The answers are in bold after the question. Remember you are already a winner for daily Earth Steward Actions.

1. What Greenhouse gas is 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide for its first 20 years in the atmosphere?

The greenhouse gas is methene. There are plans to greatly reduce methene escaping wells at the latest climate summit.

2. Pick the state that generates most of its electricity from wind—Colorado, Texas, California, Iowa.

The answer is Iowa. In 2022 it produced more than 62% of its total electricity from wind.

3. The agreement from the Paris Climate Summit decided on a goal of keeping global warming under what amount from pre-industrial levels. 5 degrees Celsius, 2 degrees Celsius. 10 degrees Celsius.

The answer is under 2 degrees. However, it was later agreed that under 1.5 degrees C. would be best.

4. Speaking of the Paris goal, the average temperature of the atmosphere has now increased to 1.2 degrees Celsius, 2.5 degree Celsius, 3.1 degree Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

The answer is 1.2 degrees Celsius. We are dangerously close to the 1.5-degree Celsius mark.

5. If the “Doomsday Glacier” in Greenland were to completely melt, sea level would rise _____ feet.

The answer is 2 feet. HOWEVER, this glacier is a block holding back other glaciers. The total rise in sea level could end up being over 10 feet. Even 2 feet would cause damage to coastal communities.

6. The average length of the growing season in the US has lengthened by _____ weeks since 1980’s.

The answer is two weeks.

7. A landmark trial concerning climate change occurred in Montana this past year. What was it about?

The verdict was found in favor of young climate activists who claimed that climate change directly affected their health and well-being.

8. Air currents are warmer because of climate change. How might this affect airplane lift offs?

Airplanes might need to reduce the weight they carry, need longer runways and face delays because of melting tarmac.

9. Heat Islands or hot spots can occur in cities, how much warmer can the area be than areas with shade protection? What can cities do to mitigate hot spots?

Hot spots or heat islands can be as much as 20 degrees warmer than other areas. Cities can plant trees, put up shaded rest spots and reduce traffic in sensitive areas.

10. This last summer was the hottest on record since _____ years ago. What can be done to reduce this temperature in the future?

The last record hottest year was 400.000 years ago. We all know that we must attack climate change from many different areas—personal actions, local political decisions, national and world actions, and industrial action. We know how to work toward solutions. It takes all of us acting together to make a difference.
