Honoring St. Francis as Season Ends

The Season of Creation ends with honoring St. Francis, remembering how he worshiped God for creating a glorious universe where all creatures and elements were brother and sister under one God. He promoted the natural world as worthy of care and consideration since all were created by God and called good. He was ahead of his time in drawing connections between human actions and natural ecology. He was committed to following the teachings of Jesus and had great compassion for the sick and those needing care and, though born wealthy, chose to live a life of poverty and simplicity.

He began three orders – the Franciscans, the Order of St. Clare (women), and an order for lay people who vowed to follow the “Rule” and do the work of caring for the poor and the sick, and walking simply on the earth.  St. Francis was one of the first to put together an ethos of actively caring for the least among us and caring for the environment as well.  It is no wonder environmentalists honor him and thank him for his prayers and lyric poetry and leadership.

Earth Steward Action:  Be inspired by St. Francis and come to Trinity’s Blessing of the Animals.
