WEALTH Day

Several TEST members attended the WEALTH Day annual event on Monday, Feb. 5, held in the Kansas State Capitol. WEALTH stands for water, energy, air, land, transportation, and health. The overall goal of this event is to “organize and advocate for policies . . . to create a just and resilient Kansas as we deal with climate disruption.” We had opportunities to hear about pending bills and visit booths representing a wide variety of topics. There were speakers and a chance to sit in on a hearing. Bishop Cathleen Bascom was present, networking and supporting the Bethany Garden Project. The day gave us an appreciation of all the efforts needed to get legislation accomplished. One bill of interest was to disallow cities to enforce plastic bag bans. Lawrence’s ban will go into effect in March –

Earth Steward Action: If you want to retain the ability to make city laws like the plastic bag ban, let your state senators know.
