Week of June 14, 2020

Hello DACA scholar supporters;
Well, for the last three years we’ve celebrated June while making and selling tamales to raise funds for our successful DACA scholars program.  Every tamale we sell goes directly to supporting local undocumented college and university students for scholarships.  You have been a help in raising $3,000 to $4,000 dollars annually for this cause.  This year, of course, we have some difficulty in getting groups together in one place to work closely making all the tamales, and most of our buyers — churches, synagogues, mosques, and other places of worship are not currently meeting in person.  This poses a problem with getting the word out, taking orders and of course delivering the tamales.
So, the Lawrence Interfailth Refugee and Immigrant Ministry steering committee came up with a new idea.  We know that those of you who ordered tamales in the past have really enjoyed these delicious Mexican entrees, but we also know that you primarily bought them to help support the students and their studies.  So, this year we will use the month of June to have a virtual tamale fundraiser.  You won’t get the tamales, but you will get the satisfaction of helping undocumented students to have an education.  Typically an order of tamales would be 1 dozen for $36.  If 100 of you would just make a donation of $36 to the DACA fund at Trinity Episcopal Church, we’ll be able to meet our annual fundraising goal.  If you’d like to do more we certainly don’t want to limit you.
You can make your contribution online at www.trinitylawrence.org.  Scroll to the bottom of the page to the “Make a Donation” button.  Click the button and you will find a form where you can make a donation.  Choose the “DACA” line and put in your amount.  You’ll need to either log in (if you already have an account), or register by creating your online profile.  I promise you will not get annoying messages asking you to continue to give.  However, your contribution will be receipted by Trinity.  For those of you who would rather not give online, you can send a check to Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vermont St, Lawrence, KS  66044.  Be sure to put DACA on the memo line.  We’re targeting the month of June to get this done, so please make your contribution soon.
I hope you will spread the word to your friends.  We’d really like to make this very difficult year the best we’ve had so far for this highly vulnerable group of residents hoping to improve their lives and contribute to our society.
Let us know if you have any questions.
Peace,
LIRIM Steering Committee
