Because we live in a representative democracy, keeping those who represent us in making and carrying out policies is of the upmost importance. Voting is the best way to see that we have on place well qualified, fair-minded, honest and solution oriented individual. There are other ways to make sure our wishes are heard and considered. Becoming involved in your chosen political party is a good way of heling individuals work their way to a primary election. Another way is to support entities that are strong advocates for specific policies like the Arbor Day Foundation or The National Parks foundation. One of the best ways is to contact individuals directly. Of course, it is rare that an elected person will personally respond to your correspondence, but all of them have staff that compile information that is directed their way. Elected officials do pay attention to this feedback because it is a signal that they are in or out of favor and serving the needs of the voters who will keep them in their position.
