Celebrating the Earth's Oceans

The United Nations declared in 2008, that June 8th would be world Ocean Day. This was in order to increase interest in the health and vitality of the oceans and to move toward international guidelines to end pollution. This is especially important today, as plastic pollution is threatening to do irreparable damage to the marine ecosystem. To celebrate & appreciate the oceans here is a fun quiz for all to take. The answers are below the questions. Hope everyone will learn some new facts.

  1. 5 oceans-Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Arctic and the Southern Ocean (circling the Antarctic).

  2. Yes, there are depressions made from saltier deposits that form undersea pools with shorelines and even waves. Yes, rivers run too.

  3. Yes? The Mountain range called, the Mid-Oceanic Ridge that snakes around all continents is 40,390 miles long. This is some 90 miles longer that the Andes Mt. Range. The Zhemchug Canyon is 2,500 ft deeper than the Grand Canyon.

  4. True. About 70% of the world’s oxygen comes from the ocean

  5. About 5%. We know more about the moon than the world’s oceans.

  6. The saltiest ocean is the Atlantic, The Pacific Ocean is largest and deepest.

  7. Yes. Many counties site differences in thickness of a bag—so that some bags are banned and others not. There are many loopholes in international and national regulating plastics and their recycling processes.

  8. True. Now more than 100 countries are gathering data and getting ready for talks on setting guidelines for plastics from production through recycling that are agreed upon by all and with enough penalties to plug loopholes.
