HOW MANY GREEN ACTIONS CAN YOU ADD?

The Tidbits articles usually ask you to follow one or two actions.  This time it is your turn to add as many green actions as you can to the following story. 

ADD YOUR OWN GREEN ACTIONS STORY

“You decide it is a good day to make soup but find you do not have all the ingredients.  You rush off to the store, buy ingredients,  However, you forgot to return the library books—so you do that chore.  Once home you prepare ingredients and place them in the pot.  You also add some canned tomatoes and stock.  You decide to make cornbread and apple crisp too.  After serving the dinner, you decide to leave the clean-up and watch some tv.”

ANSWERS TO THE “ADD YOUR OWN GREEN ACTIONS STORY”

1.   The best green action is to plan meals in advance.

2.  Making a list helps you do chores with one start up and use of the vehicle.

3.  Make sure you take and use your own bags when shopping.  One use plastic bags ar­e not good for the environment.

4.  Using a sow cooker will save electricity.  If cooking on the stove, be sure to cover the pot.  A bonus point if you thought of an electric stove over a gas stove (excess fumes are now considered dangerous from gas stoves).

5.  Cleaning and dicing the vegetables will create scraps.  Think of composting these.

6.   Be sure and rinse cans and put them into your recycling bin.

7.  Cooking cornbread and apple crisp at the same time save electricity.

8.  After removing items from the oven and turning off the heat, leave the oven door ajar for a few minutes to warm the kitchen,

9.  Add a blessing of the food that includes the farmers that care for the land that produced the veggies.  Gratitude helps form good Earth Stewards.

 

10.  Cleaning up right away save nutrients in the food and prevents food waste.  Even a little leftover soup is good for lunch the next day,

EASY VEGETABLE Bean Soup

1 cup dried white beans

2 large carrots cut into small slices

Two or three stalks of celery cut into small pieces

1 small onion diced into small pieces

Garlic to your taste

1 can of broth (beef, chicken or vegetable)

1 can of tomatoes (chili ready or Italian flavor)

Left over veggies like canned corn from previous meals

½ package of onion soup mix

2 cups of water

Dash of salt and pepper (if you like spicy-add you favorites)

Cook in slow cooker for about six hours.
