Perfect Time to Clean That Closet

100 Good Women (https://www.100goodwomen.org/) will hold a clothing exchange at the 4-H Fairgrounds (2120 Harper St., Bldg. 21) on April 27. Drop off clean, gently used adult men’s and women’s clothing from 12-1:30 pm and stay for “shopping” from 1-4 p.m. All garments will be sold for $1. This is your “early-bird” notice.

What does this have to do with the environment? Here are some statistics:

  1. 93 billion metric tons of water is used in manufacturing garments each year.

  2. 100 billion pieces of clothing made each year—30% go to landfills, or the waste stream.

  3. Every 1 ½ years, 1 million tons of microfibers enter the oceans.

  4. Many fabrics contain plastics derived from oil.

What can we do to reduce consumption:

  1. Buy quality over quantity, ignore trends.

  2. Repair, repurpose, buy used, donate.

  3. Wash full loads and use filter-bags to catch microfibers.
