SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT AND MONEY WHILE GROCERY SHOPPING

It is possible to be an environmentally savvy shopper and save money at the same time.  Additionally, some shopping habits might help your health too.  Please consider the following hints the next time you go grocery shopping:

  1. Bring your own bags and say no to other plastics by using mesh bags or string bags for produce and say no to bottled water and sugary drinks (saves money & plastic waste)

  2. Make meal plans and ingredient lists (saves on food waste and prevents impulse spending). Don’t shop hungry!

  3. Check out $ per weight to get the best bargain.  Buy bulk, but not on items that may go bad quickly.

  4. Buy less meat and plan for plant-based proteins. Reduction in meat production means less cow emissions.

  5. Shop with a friend (share gas expenses & encourage each other to spend less).

  6. Watch out for over packaging and buy less items like “hamburger helper”.  Consider cooked cereal over boxed or make your own granola.

  7. Buy natural ingredients and make your own cleaners. Why buy harsh chemicals when vinegar, baking soda and lemon juice do the job?

  8. Purchase fruits in season—can or freeze leftovers.

  9. Learn how to use leftovers for new meals.  Save by making your own soup.

Earth Steward Action: Make a tasty soup from leftovers in your refrigerator and cupboard.  Use a crock-pot to keep the kitchen cooler in our summer weather.
