Surviving Summer Heat

Weather forecasters predict a very warm summer. Are you prepared to ease energy costs, keep comfortable stay and healthy? Here are a couple of checklists to help.

Around the house: Use ceiling fans (counterclockwise), close blinds/thermal drapes, replace air-conditioner filter, install a programable thermostat (just 2 degrees higher saves money and energy), unplug appliances when not used, use slow cooker, and add houseplants. Consider insulation upgrades, check weatherstripping and seal cracks. Plant shade trees and consider light-reflecting roofs.

Personal comfort: Hydrate by sipping water throughout day, wear loose clothing, apply sunscreen of at least SPF 30, wear brimmed hat and sunglasses, avoid strenuous exercise outside from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., eat lighter (fruits/veggies/soups), add spices, use fans and mist yourself, freeze a sock filled with rice and use to cool bed, watch for heat exhaustion, and check on pets and elders.

Earth Steward Action: Be a good role model.
