THIS AND THAT
Rather than focus on one topic, this TEST TIDBITS will consist of somewhat unconnected bites of information that readers will want to know.
LIGHT BULBS: Did you know that a trusty crew of volunteers have been working hard on replacing every bulb and tube of incandescent or CFL (the bulbs that are usually shaped like swirls) with LED bulbs and tubes in our church? Next time you are in church just look around at the number of light bulbs we use--it is amazing. Why are they doing this? LED bulbs do cost a bit more to purchase, but they last much longer and use a fraction of the electrical energy of other bulbs. For instance, an incandescent bulb usually lasts for 2000 hours, a CFL for 20,000 hors and a LED bulb last for 50,000 hours (that adds up to more than 5 years of constant use). It is a great way for the church to save money over time and reduce our carbon footprint at the same time.
MORE LED NEWS: TEST has been supplying a few LED bulbs for the Trinity Interfaith Food Pantry to give out. Clients seemed pleased. This is a way to help clients also lower their carbon footprint. Every little bit helps.
GLASS COMMUNION CUPS: AS soon as the numbers allow us to return to using the “Holy Hub” system of Holy Communion, we will be able to use glass cups (fully sanitized after each use). These glass cups are a gift from TEST to the church.
PAPER SHREDDING EVENT: Do you have documents and paperwork that contain personal information that you want to be shredded. There will be a drop off opportunity--March 5, 2022, from 11 AM to 1 PM at Rock Chalk Park (parking lot), 100 Rock Chalk Lane. Three smallish bags or boxes is the limit.
HAVE SPRING CLEANING PLANS? Are you anxious to get at the garage or storeroom and get rid of some old items? Think about scheduling a time to bring them to the Douglas Co. Hazardous Waste Facility. Call 785-832-3036 or go to https://lawrenceks.org/swm/hhw and schedule a drop off time. The facility is at 2201 Kresge Rd., Lawrence, KS 66049. Items to be recycled are paint cans with unwanted paint in them, pesticides, cleaners, Mercury thermometers and CFL light bulbs. The facility also sells partially used items. You will need an appointment for either. They are open on Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and Tuesday or Thursday from 9:30 a.m.to 1 p.m.
Non- hazardous bulky items can also be recycled in a few different ways. For items that can be used safely by others call Habitat for Humanity’s Restore at 856-6920 or Salvation Army at 856-1115 or the Community Shelter Move-out-program at 832-8869. If you have bulky items that are not reusable call 832-3032 for scheduling and information on pick-up.
EARTH STEWARD ACTION: Have you changed out your light bulbs to LEDs? It is not too soon to plan for a spring clean-up job. Let’s get it done safely.
