Climate Change and Wildfires

Our prayers and concerns go out to the people of California. So far, 25 have died and at least 10,000 homes have been destroyed. Air, water and land have been polluted, and the economic losses are in the billions of dollars.

Is there a connection between these wildfires and climate change? Here is what experts are saying: 2024 was the warmest year in global history. As the earth warms, usual weather patterns become more extreme. In 2023 and early 2024 California had record moisture causing increased vegetation. But from February to the present, California experienced severe drought, quickly drying out vegetation. Then, the annual winds greatly increased (80 to 100 mph) over dried out vegetation creating a “tinderbox” situation, and water carrying aircraft were grounded. One can add other causes to the disaster, but the intensity and scope had a lot to do with our changing climate.
