COP29 TO DISCUSS GOALS & FINANCE

The Council of Parties (COP) will meet in Baku, Azerbaijan, Nov. 11-22. More than 200 countries will send representatives who will report on internal progress to meet the Paris Agreement goal of keeping global temperatures below a rise of I.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. They will also discuss where and how money is allocated.

In doing so, they must decide on financing mitigation actions (direct causes of greenhouse gas emissions like shutting coal mines), and adaptation actions (like building sea walls). They must also consider costs of protecting biodiversity as well as the huge costs of recovering from climate disasters, all the while ensuring that financing is fair and equitable for developing countries. It is worth noting that, despite overall agreements, it is up to the leaders of each country to meet internal targets and overall contributions.
