Food Waste and Climate Change

Roasted turkey, baked ham, plum pudding with hard sauce — the list of food is endless. Unfortunately, too much of it meets its end as food waste. This food waste turns into methane gas, which along with other emissions, leads to a changing climate with weather extremes. Americans waste 80 million tons of food each year. Individual households waste about 1/3 of food purchased.

What can we do? We can shop smarter and store food properly. We can cook less excess food and plan for leftover meals. We can encourage smaller servings to avoid heaping plates that are half eaten. We can freeze excess food and learn to make soups. We can send food home with guests or make casseroles for a shut-ins or donate to a feeding program. A home compost system turns scraps into good soil. Small efforts reap great benefits.
