Is NOAA Important for Our Safety?
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is a world leader in gathering data that gives us our daily weather information, and tracks storm systems. Additionally, they do research on climate change, manage our nation’s fisheries, monitor marine sanctuaries and ocean health, assist ship navigation, and warn of electric grid disruption from space storms. In 2024, there were four storms rated Category 5 (in excess of 157 mph). Lives were saved through timely forecasts.
2024 was the warmest on record, breaking 2023’s record. Weather scientists are concerned that this trend will continue. Recently NOAA was threatened with 1000+ job cuts and closures of regional offices. A former NOAA leader stated that such cuts will reduce the quality of weather forecasts and fears its eventual demise. Concerned? If so, notify Congress.
