Hurricanes and Global Warming

Hurricane Helene was two weeks ago and as of Wednesday morning, Hurricane Milton is approaching Florida as a Category 4 storm. Helene caused more than 200 deaths (some are still missing), and left millions affected.

Even climate change deniers are admitting that old patterns of storms are changing. Climate scientists depend upon collected data over the years, current storm statistics and computer modeling to say that, yes, higher global air and ocean temperatures do allow more moisture to collect in the atmosphere. Every 1.8 degree increase in temperature means a 7% increase in rainfall.

Studies show an increase in Category 3, 4 and 5 hurricanes, which pack 135-155 mph winds and very high storm surges. There seems to be no increase in incidences of lower category storms; however, increasingly strong hurricanes will continue as global temperatures increase. Curbing global warming will save lives, property and the economy.
