SEASON OF CREATION

To remind everyone, the Season of Creation runs from September first through October 4th or the celebration of St. Francis Day.  The theme of this year's Season of Creation is “Listening to the Voice of Creation” and has as its symbol the burning bush.  (See the church bulletin board for prayers).

What do we hear when we listen to the voice of creation?  Lots of different voices come to mind—birdsong, wind through trees, frogs near water, busy bees collecting nectar, or happy children playing in a pond.  I am sure you can think of more.  However, also consider the voices of people suffering from the effects of severe drought  or floods that take homes, crops and lives( both largely due to climate change).  Can you “hear” the cries of creatures on the brink of extinction, or the footfall of people fleeing environmental injustice.

The flames of Moses’s burning bush did not destroy the bush.  The Holy Spirit, speaking through the flame “affirmed that God heard the cries of all who suffered, and promised to be with us as we followed in faith to our deliverance from injustice.”

What can we do in response to the challenge of listening to both voices of creation?

  1. Walk & meditate each day listening to nature.

  2. Decide to support one organization fighting climate change or environmental injustice.

  3. Resolve to follow reduce, repurpose, repair and recycle.

  4. Devote at least one day a week to vegetarian food.

  5. Sign up for the Episcopal Carbon Tracker by going to https://www.sustainislandhome.org

Earth Steward Action:  Please try to follow all the above.
